As if this week hadn't been bad enough for many cryptocurrency owners, with stablecoins crashing and Coinbase experiencing an outage at an inconvenient time, they've now been reportedly targeted by a new phishing attack. According to CoinDesk and The Block Crypto, sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, and DexTools all warned users about suspicious popups appearing for visitors and advised them not to confirm any transactions based on popups.
This phishing attack, like many others in recent months, appeared to offer a link to the Bored Ape Yacht Club project, complete with an ape skull logo and the (now-disabled) nftapes.win domain. It prompted users to connect their MetaMask wallets (a software cryptocurrency wallet that allows access on your phone or through a browser extension) to use on the site, and because it appeared on domains that many people trust and use on a daily basis, they may have succumbed and granted it access.
